I've heard a number of stories recently about people who literally put everything they had on the line to pursue what they felt God was calling them to do, and seeing God miraculously provide and look after them. When I hear stuff like that I'm very challenged, as these people are putting their money (or lack of it) where their faith is and trusting God for absolutely everything, and see him come through. It really makes me think is it God that i'm putting my trust in, or is it my job, my bank balance or the way of life that I have here in southern England? The frightening question that comes into my mind is how do i begin to trust god more in my life? When I've been on missions in the past I got caught situations where i was so out of depth it was ridiculous and I had to pray my way through....a time where I got lost in pre tourist destination era Bulgaria with little money no phone no language skills and no address, springs to mind. The crazy thing was I look back on that trip and remember feeling the most alive that I ever had been before then, and came back a changed man. Living sold out for Jesus is hard and costly and scary, but adventures are never safe are they??

if any of this doesn't make sense, or if you have any questions about the whole jesus, god christianity then please send me a mail on ghoward81@hotmail.com

It's wierd this post ended completely differently to what i was intending!

quick update from the past couple of weeks

Played piano at a big conference in Reading (about 1 hour west of London). Had a lot of fun playing with full band, electric guitars, big PA system etc. we had a few mishaps on the way, including my keyboard spectacularly dying during the soundcheck. On the friday night I watched in astonishment from the stage as someone in the meeting that was being prayed for stood up out of her wheelchair, no joke, no dodgy televangelist stirring up hype or staging a healing, this was the real thing. if you have any questions about this sort of thing or God or anything like that email me at ghoward81@hotmail.com

Today I'm off to Bournemouth for Steve Hancock's (a friend from university, also was on the mission trip with him) party. I am taking a spare load of clothes as the last party he had ended up with water fights (yes in november) people throwing cornflakes and cream everywhere....i don't think it'll be that bad this time but i'm not taking any chances. I'm also in a sad way quite excited about going to the sheeshka/hookah bar as well....

I haven't posted anything deep and meaningful for a while just updates on how my life is going, perhaps living like a student for a weekend might stir some creativity and i'll start writing some deep and meaningful stuff about church again....

hope everyone who's reading this is well

g.

Highlights from this week:

1) Taking Megan and Lauren (my two neices, 3 and 1 years old respectively) to an indoor play park/maze in Bracknell this morning, what was fun was that me and my sister had to supervise the kids in the maze, which basically meant we crawled, slid and dived around the maze with the kids as well, took me right back to my childhood. It did make me realise i'm getting old though, as I looked around and realised a lot of the parents were my age...it's wierd everyone is settling down, buying houses, getting married having kids etc, and there's me more than ever up for travelling and living a random life.

2) Having a mamouth 6 hour practice session for the healing conference in Reading next week. (By the way if anyone is in that area, it's next thurs-sat at the loddon valley leisure centre 730pm) The best thing about the practice was that the musicians were up for messing about as well, so in bosh style we broke into funk, jazz, psychadelic riffs in between doing worship songs. Church music can be very musically restrictive sometimes so it's good to have a bit of fun along the way.

The following extract is from Pete Greigs book Red moon rising. I can't tell you how much I get inspired and stirred up when I read more and more from it. If you haven't read this book yet, read it!

The vision is JESUS – obsessively, dangerously, undeniably Jesus.

The vision is an army of young people.

You see bones? I see an army. And they are FREE from materialism.

They laugh at 9-5 little prisons.
They could eat caviar on Monday and crusts on Tuesday.
They wouldn't even notice.
They know the meaning of the Matrix, the way the west was won.
They are mobile like the wind, they belong to the nations. They need no passport.. People write their addresses in pencil and wonder at their strange existence.
They are free yet they are slaves of the hurting and dirty and dying.
What is the vision ?
The vision is holiness that hurts the eyes. It makes children laugh and adults angry. It gave up the game of minimum integrity long ago to reach for the stars. It scorns the good and strains for the best. It is dangerously pure.

Light flickers from every secret motive, every private conversation.
It loves people away from their suicide leaps, their Satan games.
This is an army that will lay down its life for the cause.
A million times a day its soldiers

choose to loose
that they might one day win
the great 'Well done' of faithful sons and daughters.

Such heroes are as radical on Monday morning as Sunday night. They don't need fame from names. Instead they grin quietly upwards and hear the crowds chanting again and again: "COME ON!"

And this is the sound of the underground
The whisper of history in the making
Foundations shaking
Revolutionaries dreaming once again
Mystery is scheming in whispers
Conspiracy is breathing…
This is the sound of the underground

And the army is discipl(in)ed.

Young people who beat their bodies into submission.

Every soldier would take a bullet for his comrade at arms.
The tattoo on their back boasts "for me to live is Christ and to die is gain".

Sacrifice fuels the fire of victory in their upward eyes. Winners. Martyrs. Who can stop them ?
Can hormones hold them back?
Can failure succeed? Can fear scare them or death kill them ?

And the generation prays

like a dying man
with groans beyond talking,
with warrior cries, sulphuric tears and
with great barrow loads of laughter!
Waiting. Watching: 24 – 7 – 365.

Whatever it takes they will give: Breaking the rules. Shaking mediocrity from its cosy little hide. Laying down their rights and their precious little wrongs, laughing at labels, fasting essentials. The advertisers cannot mould them. Hollywood cannot hold them. Peer-pressure is powerless to shake their resolve at late night parties before the cockerel cries.

They are incredibly cool, dangerously attractive

inside.

On the outside? They hardly care. They wear clothes like costumes to communicate and celebrate but never to hide.
Would they surrender their image or their popularity?
They would lay down their very lives - swap seats with the man on death row - guilty as hell. A throne for an electric chair.

With blood and sweat and many tears, with sleepless nights and fruitless days,

they pray as if it all depends on God and live as if it all depends on them.

Their DNA chooses JESUS. (He breathes out, they breathe in.)
Their subconscious sings. They had a blood transfusion with Jesus.
Their words make demons scream in shopping centres.
Don't you hear them coming?
Herald the weirdo's! Summon the losers and the freaks. Here come the frightened and forgotten with fire in their eyes. They walk tall and trees applaud, skyscrapers bow, mountains are dwarfed by these children of another dimension. Their prayers summon the hounds of heaven and invoke the ancient dream of Eden.

And this vision will be. It will come to pass; it will come easily; it will come soon.
How do I know? Because this is the longing of creation itself, the groaning of the Spirit, the very dream of God. My tomorrow is his today. My distant hope is his 3D. And my feeble, whispered, faithless prayer invokes a thunderous, resounding, bone-shaking great 'Amen!' from countless angels, from hero's of the faith, from Christ himself. And he is the original dreamer, the ultimate winner.

Guaranteed.

well this is a wierd post. I'm writing from a pub in dublin airport. I've been on a business trip this week getting a big customer get their customer service computer system running. When I was younger I always used to see business people at the airport in suits with their laptops sitting, eating and drinking on their own andsaying to myself that i'd never become one of them, and yet here I am. I still feel very out of place walking around in a suit and tie and my laptop and staying in business hotels and eating in respectable restaurants and being 'professional'...very wierd. One thing cracked me up no end today was I saw in big letters 'TPS' in a diagram of the wall of someone's desk which undoubtedly indicated that the customer actually has TPS reports, it took me right back to the film 'office space', with PC loadletter and 'What's happening...." and those wonderful TPS reports. (note if you haven't seen that film..go watch it now, and you'll understand this post a lot better!), it's kinda a running joke between some of my friends and I. Perhaps i'm easily entertained, but i couldn't take what the guy was saying serious after that, definately made the last few hours of work much better.

Well it's been a long week, haven't really done much, although i managed to escape to temple bar in dublin last night which was pretty cool.

anyway i better stop here before i miss my flight back to london and inadvertently spend a weekend in ireland, which wouldn't be a bad thing but...nevermind..

g.

update:

highlights from last week:

1 Bosh did our first gig since august, it went surprisingly well considering we hadn't played togther in a while, it was good though to have some fun and rock out and to be worshipping at the same time.

2 A few of us made a road trip to Hillsongs london last night. We drove in convoy and I didn't know the way there completely which wasn't the best start, on the way home I took several wrong turns and somehow ended up in hyde park instead of the m4. I also had a minor heart attack coming within inches of running down a huge deer ( a couple of years ago i actually did hit a deer at 70mph which wasn't too pleasant), having said that it was good fun to simply hang out with friends in a meeting and in the restaurant afterwards. So often people think 'church' is the meetings, but i'm beginning to get the picture that it's a lot more about relationships, people united in their identity in christ living their lives out together. I would actually argue that sitting in a thai restaurant talking about God is church as well....contreversial maybe....

3 Being blown away by 1 John 3 verse 1 "How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! Had the usual weekly activities, working, getting tired, doing cell group, going to the gym, drinking caffeine, then this weekend I went to Bournemouth to hang out with my band and friends from university, and had some random moments. One in particular was Dave Griff (the lead singer from my band bosh) invited us to see him play bongos for a pub gig. So a few of us pitched up to the pub, only that it wasn't a gig it was actually someone's private birthday party, so about 10 of us inadvertently gate crashed the party and got not so nice looks from the people who's party it was whilst we sat in the corner and ate their food. Was quite a good gig though.

more to come....

Well I'm writing from my parents house in Wokingham, I arrived about 6-7 hours ago and haven't really slept for about 26 hours. Since the last post I did a night out on the town college station style with a load of Jay's friends which went on way into the morning, then friday afternoon I woke up and drove to Austin with jay and one of his friends in Jeff's truck (the one that i had driven psuedo legally), met up with jeff who had flown in from el paso, and did a night out on the town Austin TX style. Austin is definately a lot different to the rest of Texas that i've seen, it's a cool place. So the saturday Jeff got pulled over by the cops for 'apparently' not inidicating whilst changing lanes, he also got a ticking off for having out of date licence plates, what was wierd was the cop seemed a lot more interested to find out whether Jeff was a student on the way to see Texas play in the college football finals, after getting a warning we saw about 7-8 cops in as many minutes pulling people over....So after experiencing the joys of US traffic cops we went back to dallas, and i reluctantly got on flight AA50 armed with a ton of CD's and the experiences of a random week including shooting guns, flaming yeager bombs, taco bell, and thursday night in college station!

until next time, which is going to be a trip to Prague for new years....

Very random stuff happened last night. I went to a bible study run by the IHOP here in College station, and got prayed for by some of the guys. What was crazy is that people who had never met me before started telling me stuff about me and my gifts, callings etc that was 100% spot on and confirmed a lot of stuff that God's been doing in me lately, i went away very encouraged. I've just stumbled out of bed, just been handed a coffee, i'm also eating cereal out of a huge cooking dish and a teaspoon as there wasn't any clean stuff left, such a student thing but feels strangely normal. talking of strange things on the wall of the kitchen is a bit of toilet paper with some writing and a verse, one of the guys here prophesied whilst asleep over on the guys he was sharing the room, another guy who was awake heard it and wrote it down on toilet paper as that was the nearest thing to hand...very random.

more to come later....

Well I made it to College station in one peice. For part of the journey this morning I drove a truck with out of date licence plates, the owner somewhere in new mexico, no insurance documentation in the dashboard and little clue whether driving a private vehicle with a british driving licence was illegal and covered by insurance as the insurance support person we spoke to had probably never had a request for a englishman to drive a truck in texas and was somewhat flummoxed. So after praying my way through the journey, surviving a minor heart attack when a traffic cop told me off for parking illegally at starbucks (ie I was expecting to produce drivers licence, insurance stuff etc) we finally ended up here. It's pretty hot, probably somewhere near 100 degrees (38 celcius), lots of students around and i'm sitting in student hang out come coffee shop drinking some very good coffee at the moment. Now i'm deep into middle america i feel farther away from home which strangely to me is a good thing, i made the stupid mistake yesterday of opening a work related email which unfortunately was a stroppy email by the HR manager about me missing a work course, which at the time suddenly propelled me back into the pressures of my job and stressed me out a bit, so if there's one thing i've learnt, don't touch any work email account whilst on holiday! Still the experience of driving to college station this morning took my mind off it. I think one thing that i've got out from my trip so far is to for the most part i haven't beeen a traditional to tourist, to be in random situations rather than wandering round some dusty museum or going on an open bus tour of the city's historic features and going back to a spotless hotel for an a la carte dinner. I'm beginning to discover that there's something a lot more real and exciting by being (sometimes accidently) in situations where everyhting doesn't fit into place and there is a healthy measure of unpredictablity in the mix.

anyway for some reason this has taken ages to write so i'll stop here, i'll blog more tomorrow probably, hope everyones doing well,

g.

days 2+3 in Dallas...

Well I thought i better update the past couple of days: Well In the past couple of days i've done some shopping to take advantage of cheap US prices, brought several CD's, brought a load of clothes etc. We also went to an expensive steak house with one of Jeff's friends and had the most amazing steak i've ever had. I was going to bungee jump tonight but unfortunately it was closed...doh. Tomorrow me and Jay are going down to college station for a bit, for logistical reasons i'm having to drive Jeff's truck there as he's meeting us after flying into Austin on friday night after his 3 day busienss trip in el paso. I'm slightly worried as we're not completely sure i'm ok insurance and legally wise to drive the truck on an english licence, so we're praying i don't get pulled over by the police and get in trouble, the car insurance company were a bit vague about everything. Seriously I'm sure i'll be ok, it will be fun driving a 5.7 litre engine as I come from a country where a 2 litre engine is considered big. So the next couple of days i'm in college station which is a student city, then going to Austin on friday night, then flying home, this trip is going way too quick. Already i'm planning my next trip, possibly prague for new years with some of the guy from here in Dallas.

Anyway it's late and we're expecting to get a take out pizza to arrive soon.

g.

Day 1+2 In Dallas

Well I'm now more or less adjusted to US time, yesterday afternoon/evening was a slog to stay awake, I had to resort on a quadruple espresso from starbucks which kept me going til about 11, i did nearly 24 hours awake and on the go. So after having a lesuirely morning to recover from yesterday we went to a Texas Rangers baseball game, I drove jeff's 5.7 litre truck for a bit, then we went to the shooting range! So for the first time in my life I used a shotgun and to surprisingly good success, it was definately a very surreal experience, even more surreal driving around with a shotgun casually sitting on the front seat of the truck, and seeing random people walking around the parking areas lesuirely carrying rifles, shotguns and handguns. So this evening I had some traditional tex mex food, and soon i'm out on the town.

More random stuff to come this week, possibly some bungee jumping and who knows what else. Hope everyone is doing well back home, just to rub it in it's been 32 degrees both days here...

anyway i'm off out, until next time

g.

well I've arrived. Had a ridiculously early start this morning followed by a dull 10 hour flight next to a guy who refused to make any sort of conversation, my bags got searched both ends at customs whilst I observed slightly dazed and generally have been walking around like a zombie, but am happy to be back in the US. Jeff pitched up the Dallas aiport in his 5.7 litre truck playing the theme tune to team america full volume....heck yeah, if you've seen that movie you'll know what i mean. So far this afternoon i've sampled the delights of taco bell and american beer, i guess i'll be sampling some more tonight before i eventually get tired and fall asleep. So far I know this trip i'm going to a baseball game, going to college station for a couple of days, going to austin which apparently is a crazy city. It's wierd as soon as i got off the plane i became immediately aware that i stand out being an englishman, people give me strange looks when i say 'cheers mate', but i'm sure i'll get used to it.

Anyway there's more to come and hopefully some photos, i'm going to go back to watching college football on jeff's 62 inch tv, yes 62 inches...

g.

In 48 hours I will be in the US, I have no idea what's going to happen. It started off with champagne (always a good start) and being told i'm getting a bonus (an even better start). Then it went downhill, the drinking began, and well didn't really stop. Several dissaperances of staff occured during the day, one guy made it to 1pm then puked, collapsed, tried to write software whilst drunk and eventually found his way to a floor to pass out. Interlaced with drinking were team building exercises, I have no idea why people think these are good ideas, I reckon only about 6 people in the world actually enjoy these things and find them fun....perhaps i'm too cynical. So after participating in a ping pong ball fight over dinner and watching my company drink themsleves silly I made my way to London to the city of london boiler room where Simon from this summer's mission was, to randomly meet some of Jay's friends from college station TX. I love prayer rooms, it's where you cut through all the crap and it's just you and God, i've been reading red moon rising this week which is the story of 24-7, and am nothing less than inspired and have definately caught something of the 24-7 vision. Who knows what craziness this will lead to?

g.

This weekend was good, i spent most of it with south africans, i even ate billtong. kif. I also went to a cracker of a prayer meeting with my church and the south african church in reading, got very much stirred up by God. The guys I was with were telling me about their leaf situation, yes yes very big issue. Basically their neighbour is chucking leaves over her fence into their garden (as apparently they poisin the dogs...yeah right what a load of rubbish) instead of putting them into bins as normal people do and irritating Wendy and Gail. So for most of the weekend G, W and I have been hatching plans to get back at the neighbours. Our ideas so far are

1) properly cake their house and garden with leaves
2) do the same but with mud
3) cover the cars and conseveatory with breadcrumbs to attract birds which will poo everywhere
4) buy several fluffy replicas of the dogs in question and hang them from nooses on the tree overhanging the house to wind up the leave throwers...

admittedly these are pretty tame ideas, we were't in that much of a creative mood. the people in question are snooty retirees, so i'm throwing out a challenge to whoever's reading this to come up with any funny ideas on revenge and let me know...not that as a christian i'd advocate that... no not at all

Well another week has passed since the last post. My back has recovered more or less but i'm trying to make sure I don't do anything to upset it again. It was very embaressing last night having to turn down helping someone dig up his garden due to back problems, I felt like an old man. This week I worked at Gatwick Airport for a customer at work, I had analysis meetings for 10 hours one day and 9 hours the next, I got so bored I began to nod off as I stared at the planes taking off outside wishing that I was on one of them, only to be rudely awoken by my manager asking me if i'd noted that particular point down. I began perfecting the art of looking like i'm working but staring into space, it's quite a hard thing to do, i'm sure i'll have more opportunities to do it whilst i work in IT On wednesday I finally made it to my cell group which makes a change, it was a really good time, we prayed, got to know the new people and spent the evening talking about God. What I liked about it is that it was organic, it felt natrual and God's presence was there. My friend Jay's recent post said " The church isn't something you plan, it just happens when people who are united through Christ come together" which i'm sure maybe a bit contreversial but i quite agree with him. i've found myelf getting on the church topic again, hmmm.

a brief sum up of the past 24 hours:

Dave Griff the lead singer of my band got married today. It has been a bit of a crazy day. It started last night when the PA van didn't turn up at church for setup and practice til 1030, so the sound check and practice didn't happen, not a good start. Next I stayed on the floor of Matt's (the guitarist from my band) house, unfortunately this morning when I woke up I had pulled a muscle in my back again during the night which was rather uncomfortable (i did it last week as well so it was a bit week already), then I sneezed a few mins later which then managed to make it click again leaving me in quite a bit of pain. So after praying, limping and getting grumpy I made it to church to set up, rather embaressingly i had to get someone to reverse my car as i couldn't physically turn my body to see where i was reversing....doh. After that it did get better. I was playing with a band called Brother John (who are an awesome band), everything clicked into place musically (and nothing more clicked out of place physically) and God was certainly in the place, it was an amazing sight to see the majority of 400 people going for it in worship. The wedding was great, bosh got on stage and played some songs later on, we all had a laugh and I finally made it home, back getting better. I also realised that I'd like to move back to bournemouth...watch this space.

anyway its 1AM and i'm tired, time to stop methinks.....

A quick catch up on the week that's almost over. The party that my friend invited half the church to only got 8 people, which kinda sucked in the fact that everyone was either busy or didn't want to come, but was nice as it meant we all could just chill out and relax. Work has been alright this week, I was amused to get described as having a jynx by my peers, as every bit of hardware I work on seems to go wrong when i'm working on it, no joke. This week I also made my way to bournemouth for a curry with fellow musicians from nth degree (the music organisation/collective that I am part of) as the lead singer from my band is getting married this weekend. We had some good conversations about music, about ideas on the current congregational model of church which became quite deep and thought provoking, it has stirred up some stuff that's been on my mind for a while now. For example when the recent mission was in Prague we began witnessing in the middle of a bar, and as the evening went on we began to think "why couldn't we do church here, and take church into the culture rather than expect people to adapt to our slightly cheezy contemporary christian culture to fit in to hear the gospel?" This is touching on the whole debate about the emerging church, I must admit I don't know an awful lot about this but will be researching this a bit more to try and find some clarity in my viewpoint, especially as 24-7 has been described as 'emerging church'...watch this space.

So still I haven't stopped everything and moved to azerbaijan as threatened in post 1 of this blog, however it's now under 1 month til I go to texas to hang out with jay and jeff from my earlier mission to eastern europe. I'm really looking forward to the experience, including dare i say it the attention that being in the deep south with a british accent might draw....on the flip side it will take about 5 mins each time I introduce myself as people from the US generally don't immediately understand the correct english pronounciation of my name. doh! It would be much easier if called myself Bob.

So this weekend I am going down to bournemouth, playing piano at the wedding, enjoying the beach, and sleeping as much as i can afterwards, so until next time....

g.

So what has happened since the last blog? Nothing hugely random and crazy as yet, but hopefully that will change tonight as there's a bit of a party happening here in a couple of hours. A guy from my cell is leaving for Bristol so we're throwing him a party. Well I didn't realise it'd be a party, I thought it would be a few people round for a pivo, but my cell co leader has invited most of the church to my not so big house in Bracknell, so it looks like it's going to be that way now. Parties are interesting things, some go really well, some go flat very quickly and others go completely crazy, it would be funny to see lots of church folk go crazy but the carpet has just been cleaned.......hmmmm i feel old.

So the fact that I'm still here means I haven't chucked in everything and left as i threatened to in my last post, I've thought about it some more and realised that chucking in everything and leaving would actually take several months to execute. I reckon as time goes on it will get harder to do this, but hey. It's wierd a lot of my friends are starting to put roots down, buy houses, get into management jobs and generally become suburbanised. The thought that I might never leave this place does kinda freak me out a bit, it gives me impetus to do something about it! When I was in Prague I met a guy who had built a successful furniture business after finishing university in england, yet felt he wasn't being challenged so shut up shop and moved to Prague, is living off his savings and will soon be living off faith. As he was telling me this part of me was thinking "my gosh he had it made, nice cars, lots of money was he out of his mind?", but as he went on i realised that he had gained so much more and that I was in a lot of comfort zones. I couldn't help but be inspiried and challenged.

well i need to go throw a party,

peace,

g.

I started a blog for the mission that I was on earlier this summer, but have had requests to keep going...so here goes

It's been about 3 weeks now since I got back from a mamouth journey accross eastern europe with 24-7 prayer. I saw a lot of countries, saw God do some cool stuff, met some awesome people and as well as some bizarre people, ate some wierd food and managed to keep the team more or less together during the mission. By the end I was tired but could have gone on from there for quite some time, but a job and a life back in england was beckoning so I got on the plane home. It would be quite exciting though just to drop everything and go...I would like to do it at least once in my life, one day...Anyway as that day hasn't come yet i went and got back into the swing of being a musician, an uncle, a consultant and a church goer.

So any memorable moments from the past few weeks?

1) playing one last gig with my band before our 2 month break, it was a great evening and had random conversation with chinese guy wanting to use our music in TV shows in the far east...

2) met up with some of the guys from the mission, had some indian food, went round london, discussed the random american we met in prague who was obsessed with a wierd christian doctrine, drank some pivo (beer), had many laughs and went to a wicked church in marylebone. I also booked a flight to Texas for this October to visit Jay and Jeff from the trip.

3) finally got copies of my band's new album, i was thrilled when my 3 year old neice told me she liked it.

4) one of my best mates got married in London, was an awesome wedding and generallly a great day. I also watched him get annhialiated with paintballs on his stag day...very funny.

5) Got involved in writing a worship song with some friends and recorded it, realised that it's very difficult to write christian music that didn't sound christian.

Plans for this week? Nothing that exciting so far....perhaps i should quit my job, jump on a plane and go somewhere.....
